Winter Weather Driving Tips

Winter Weather Driving Tips For Snow Sleet and Icy Roads

With all the winter weather North Carolina has had lately here are some important winter weather driving tips. North Carolina only gets snow, sleet and freezing rain a couple of times a year if that. It doesn’t take a lot of winter precipitation on the roads before making driving conditions hazardous. Multiple wrecks and fender bender occur when drivers hit the road in North Carolina during these winter storms. Just take a few precautions and we can all make the roads a safer place to drive in the winter weather storms.

winter driving

Drive slow and pay close attention to the road.

Avoid distractions like taking on a cell phone, adjusting the radio or eating and drinking.

Allow plenty of room between you and the car in front of you (3-5 car lengths)

Do not use the cruise control when driving on slick roads.

Look and steer in the direction you want to go.

If the car starts to slide steer in the opposite direction without jerking the steering wheel.

Do not make any sudden stops or starts.

Always wear your seatbelt.

It you are using your windshield wipers state law requires you to have your headlights on (any time of day).

Clear the windshield of snow or ice before driving so you have an unobstructed view.

Clean the car roof of any snow to prevent it from blowing off while driving and possibly hitting cars behind you.

If you start to skid take your foot off the gas and wait for the car to slow. Do not hit the brake!
