The first week of October is ideal for catching fall foliage in elevations above 5,000 feet. Prime fall foliage usually is viewed in the second and third weeks of October. Traffic on the parkway on the second and third weekends of October is very crowded.

Location: The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches for 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina. It offers numerous spots to view the fall foliage. Some popular areas include Doughton Park, Rough Ridge, Flat Rock,  Mount Mitchell, Linville Falls, Craggy Gardens, Waterrock Knob, and Graveyard Fields. Driving Tips: The parkway is a scenic drive itself, so take your time and enjoy the journey. The speed limit is 45 miles per hour. Be patient, take your time, and enjoy the ride. Be prepared for increased traffic during peak foliage season. Consider visiting on weekdays or early mornings to avoid crowds.
