Hurricane Arthur Tracking Toward Atlantic Beach

Hurricane Arthur is still a Category 1 hurricane but may still strengthen into a Cat. 2 before making landfall later tonight. The latest track looks like landfall will be near Atlantic Beach, NC. Many people have already lost power. It’s a fast moving storm and should be gone by Friday morning. Rain bands have been coming ashore with heavy rain in the southeastern counties of North Carolina. Conditions at the coast are rapidly becoming worse with rain, wind and heavy surf. Officials warn of soundside flooding in the coastal counties. Many towns have curfews posted for safety reasons.

 

Hurricane Arthur Moving Fast Toward the NC Coast

Hurricane Arthur is fast approaching the NC coast. Sustained winds are at 80 mph. An eastern turn is expected but has not happened yet. The center of the Hurricane is forecast to pass between Morehead City and Cape Hatteras early Friday about 2:00 am. Hurricane Arthur is a fast moving storm which is good news, but the rain, wind and rip currents associated with the hurricane can cause a lot of damage to the North Carolina barrier islands, inlets and roads.

Soon to be Cat. 1 Hurricane Arthur Causing Closures at NC Beaches

Tropical Storm Arthur will probably become Category 1 Hurricane Arthur and it is already causing North Carolina beach officials to close campground, beaches and National Parks.

Tropical storm and hurricane watches were posted for the North Carolina coast this morning by the National Weather Service. Rip currents, wind and rain will more than likely be a problem with this July storm. Campgrounds as Ocracoke, Frisco, Cape Point and Oregon Inlet will close at noon today. All National Park Service beaches will be closed to off-road vehicles by 9 p.m. Wednesday night.The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will close at noon today and the Bodie Island Lighthouse will close at 6:30 p.m. today. Cape Lookout National Seashore will close at 5 p.m. today.
The North Carolina Ferry System is operating on a normal schedule today but will more than likely be effected or stopped if high winds occur. The NCDOT is already moving heavy equipment to the coast in preparation for the storm. Highway 12 along the coast is a common problem from sand and overwash with tropical systems and hurricanes.
Many towns have already rescheduled Fourth of July celebrations for after the storm.

Tropical Storm Arthur May Be the First Hurricane for NC Coast

Tropical Storm Arthur is still forming in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida and Georgia. It is forecast to head up the coast and bring wind and rain to eastern North Carolina including the Outer Banks by late Thursday evening. Pay attention to the weather if travel plans for the July 4th holiday include eastern North Carolina or the Outer Banks.

Will the NC Coast July 4th Holiday Weekend Be Effected by Tropical System?

Will Tropical Storm Arthur bring rain to the July 4th holiday weekend on the North Carolina coast? This coming July 4th holiday weekend at the NC coast may be rained out if the low pressure turns into a tropical system. A low pressure now off the coast of Florida is trying to form into the first tropical depression of the year. If named it will become Arthur.  Weather forecasters are showing a possible run up the NC coast by Friday. Travel along the NC coast may be effected with possible wind and rain.
