The NC Mountain State Fair Starts Friday Sept. 6!

The NC Mountain State Fair celebrates the people, agriculture, art and tradition that make the NC mountain region so great. The NC Mountain fair is at the WNC Agricultural Center at 1301 Fanning Bridge Rd. in Fletcher, NC. It starts Friday Sept. 6 and runs thru Sept. 15, 2013. 2013 Nantahala Gorge ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships in Bryson City

The 2013 Nantahala Gorge ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships activities begin on September 2 with the opening ceremonies in Bryson City and continue through the week with daily freestyle competition on the Nantahala “2013 Wave”. The championships conclude on Sunday, September 8 with the finals and awards ceremonies.

This ultimate whitewater event will feature top freestyle athletes from around the world, as well as plenty of activities, competitions and events for spectators and fans.

NC Flash Floods in Western NC

Thunderstorms across western North Carolina stalled on Saturday and dumped about a foot of rain on the area, causing power outages and flash floods that flooded homes and washed out roads and bridges.There were 18 reports of swift-water rescues.Parts of Catawba and surrounding counties were under water Saturday.It was some of the worst flash flooding in years caused by a nearly stationary weather system that dumped 10 inches of rain in about six hours.

Blue Ridge Parkway Closure Due to Road Damage

The Blue Ridge Parkway is closed for 21 miles from Milepost 376 at Ox Creek Road to Milepost 355 at Mt. Mitchell State Park. The closure was neccessarydue to structual damage to the road as a result of heavy and prolonged rain in the past few weeks. The area is closed to all traffic including bike and pedestrians. A detour route is available that directs traffic from Asheville, NC, along Interstate 40 to U.S. Route 221, back to the Parkway at Spruce Pine, NC, and alternately from Spruce Pine south to Asheville via U.S.Route 221 and Interstate 40.The Parkway will release more information once a construction and repair schedule is established. Coast Guard Rescue Off Coast of NC

Seven people were rescued by the US Coast Coast off the coast of Cape Hatteras from a 26-foot sinking boat Going Deep. The boaters called for help after the boat started taking on water. Coast Guard out of Elizabeth City responded by boat and helicopter. No injuries were reported and the boat was towed to a marina.

Ghost Town Actor Injured In Gunfight

An actor who plays “The Apache Kid” in a staged gunfight shootout at the Ghost Town amusement park in the mountains was injured on July 6. The park uses guns loaded with blanks but the actor was injured. Also there was no running water to wash the blood off the hands of those that helped after the incident. There was also no medical personnel on standby. The NC state Labor Department will investigate.Ghost Town is in western North Carolina atop Buck Mountain in Maggie Valley.
